What is the difference between Active and Passive Pace of Play?

Q: What is the difference between Active and Passive Pace of Play, and which should I use?

A: Golf Genius offers two methods for tracking pace of play. The method you choose depends on your staffing and how scores are being entered during the round.

Active Pace of Play

Active Pace of Play is a staff-driven tracking model. Dedicated Pace of Play Station GGIDs are assigned to staff members or volunteers positioned at checkpoints around the course or rover stations. When a group passes a checkpoint, the staff member records the time manually from the mobile app. Use Active Pace of Play when:

  • You have starters, marshals, rovers, or other dedicated personnel available to monitor pace.

  • You want checkpoint messages delivered to groups in real time.

  • You have fixed or rover monitoring points set up around the course.

Note: Active Pace of Play cannot be combined with scoring under a single GGID. Staff members walking with groups and entering scores cannot simultaneously act as Pace of Play stations.

Passive Pace of Play

Passive Pace of Play is a scoring-driven tracking model. No Pace of Play stations or station GGIDs are required. Instead, timestamps are automatically recorded when the first score for a hole is entered using Live Scoring on the mobile app. Use Passive Pace of Play when:

  • Scorers are walking with groups and entering scores as play progresses.

  • You want minimal staffing requirements.

  • You want observational pace monitoring without dedicated checkpoint personnel.

Note:

  • Observation messages are not available with Passive Pace of Play.

  • Timestamps are not recalculated if scores are deleted or edited.

  • Passive Pace of Play measures group progress, not individual golfer pace. Accurate and timely score entry is essential for reliable results.
